Lumen theme guide
Lumen is an Online Store 2.0 theme built for new & used gear retailers, with a full set of components for product condition, technical specs and trade-in flows. This guide covers everything you need to go from install to launch.
Overview
Lumen ships with the sections and templates you need to run a full storefront: home, collection, product, cart, search, 404, customer account pages, blog and gift cards. Every color, font and corner radius is exposed as a theme setting, so a full re-skin is possible without touching code.
Product pages include a condition badge, a warranty label, a specifications tab, an editorial "verdict" tab, and an optional cross-sell to a used counterpart of the same product. All of it is driven by product metafields, described below.
Quick start
Follow these steps in order after installing Lumen on your store.
- Pick a style preset (Default, Midnight or Editorial) from the theme picker at install time, or switch later (see Style presets).
- Replace demo copy, images and statistics (see Demo content).
- Create the product metafields your catalog needs (see Metafields).
- Fill in your legal policies so footer links appear (see Legal pages).
- Optional: connect a reviews app, enable product comparison, configure collection filters.
- Place a real test order on desktop and mobile before going live.
Demo content
Every section that ships with placeholder copy or invented statistics has a warning note at the top of its settings in the Theme Editor. Search for these notes and replace the content before launch. Do not publish invented review counts, testimonials or service claims.
- Header / footer: store name, tagline, address, legal/company details.
- Hero (home): headline, body copy, the three stat numbers (shipping, warranty, review score).
- Benefits band (home): the three service-guarantee columns.
- Testimonials (home): names, quotes and ratings are placeholders.
- Trade-in (home): turnaround time and service details.
custom.specs_text, verdict quote and body) accept plain text, not JSON (see Metafields for the exact format your catalog should use).Metafields
Create these under Admin → Settings → Custom data → Products, using the exact keys below (namespace custom). The theme already reads them under these names. If a metafield is missing, the section using it simply stays hidden, which is expected, not a bug.
| Key | Type | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
custom.condizione | Single line text | Condition badge on card & product page, e.g. "Used · A-", "New sealed". |
custom.nota_stato | Single line text | First line of card meta, e.g. "12,400 shutter count", "Sealed". |
custom.innesto | Single line text | Mount type (RF, E, Z, X, L, M), also used as the value for the "Mount" collection filter. |
custom.garanzia_label | Single line text | Warranty badge on the product page. |
custom.rating | Single line text | Star rating shown in product meta, e.g. "4.9". |
custom.review_count | Integer | Static review count, shown until a reviews app block is added (see Product reviews). |
custom.usato_correlato | Product reference | Links a new listing to its used counterpart, for the "Also available used" box. |
custom.specs_text | Multi-line text | Specifications table. One line per spec, format Label: Value, for example Sensor: full-frame CMOS, 24 MP. Plain text, not JSON: editable by hand or via CSV import. |
custom.verdict_quote | Single line text | Short pull-quote in the "Our verdict" tab. Leave blank to hide the tab. |
custom.verdict_body | Multi-line text | Full verdict text below the quote. |
Label: Value format so store staff can edit specs directly in the Shopify admin without writing JSON.Style presets
Lumen includes three ready-made style presets. Pick one from the style gallery when you first add the theme, or apply a different one later from the Theme Editor's saved presets.
Default
Warm, editorial heritage look. Playfair Display + Inter, sharp corners.
Midnight
Dark-first studio look. Fraunces + Work Sans, soft corners.
Editorial
Light, modern, sans-serif. Work Sans + Inter, rounded corners.
Every color, the three fonts, the container width and the corner radius are individually editable under Theme settings. A preset is just a starting point, not a lock-in.
Product reviews
The "Reviews" tab on the product page shows a static count from custom.review_count (or a "no reviews yet" message) until you connect a reviews app. To switch to live reviews: install a reviews app (Judge.me, Loox, Ryviu, etc.), then add its app block to the Product tabs section in the Theme Editor. Once an app block is present, it takes priority and the static count is no longer shown.
Product comparison
An optional side-by-side comparison feature (icon on product cards and product pages, a comparison bar, and a dedicated page) is disabled by default and requires no metafields.
- Theme settings → Product comparison → enable
Enable product comparison. - Create a page with template
page.compare. - Select that page in the
Compare pagesetting.
Selection state is stored in the visitor's browser (localStorage); there is no backend or metafield involved.
Collection filters
The "Condition" and "Mount" filters in the collection sidebar are rendered generically from Shopify's native collection.filters. To make them appear, configure product filters in the Search & Discovery app based on custom.innesto and a condition tag or metafield of your choice.
Legal pages
Footer links only render when the corresponding policy exists, so there are never dead links:
- Privacy / Terms: read from
shop.privacy_policy/shop.terms_of_service. Fill these in under Admin → Settings → Policies. - Cookie policy: optional, based on a page with the handle
cookie(Shopify has no native cookie-policy object).
Languages
Storefront interface strings (buttons, labels, cart, search, account, gift card) ship translated in four languages: Italian (default), English, Spanish and French. Enable the ones you need under Admin → Settings → Languages.
The Theme Editor's own labels (section and setting names) are translated in the same four languages, so merchants using an Italian, English, Spanish or French admin see a translated editor, not just a translated storefront.
Content you type into the Theme Editor (hero copy, blocks, metafields) is not covered by these files. Translate it with Shopify's native Translate & Adapt app, which picks up section, block and metafield content automatically.
To add another language: duplicate the matching locale files (interface and, if needed, editor-label files) with the correct ISO code and translate every key.
Known limitations
- Hover states use a consistent rule (an ~8% lightening / shift to the accent-bright tone) across the theme rather than being individually art-directed per component.
- Collection filters (Condition / Mount) only populate once Search & Discovery is configured. The theme renders whatever that app provides.
- The reviews tab shows a static count until a reviews app block is added, as described above.
- Legal footer links depend on policies being filled in under Admin → Settings → Policies; until then, they are hidden rather than broken.
FAQ
Can I switch style preset after installing the theme?
Yes. Duplicate your live theme, then reapply a different saved preset from the Theme Editor, review it, and publish when ready.
What happens if I don't create the product metafields?
Nothing breaks. Any section that depends on a missing metafield is simply skipped or shown empty. There are no errors on the storefront.
Do I need the product comparison feature?
No, it's optional and off by default. Enable it only if you want a side-by-side comparison experience.
Can I add a language beyond Italian, English, Spanish and French?
Yes. Duplicate the relevant locale files with the new ISO code and translate every key, both for the storefront and for the Theme Editor labels.
